Lincoln University of Missouri is a historically black college, located in Jefferson City, which is the county seat of Cole County and the capital of the US state of Missouri, having a population estimated at a number of nearly 50 000 inhabitants, during the 2008 census. Jefferson City is also the principal city of the Jefferson City metropolitan area, which contains all of Callaway and Cole counties.
Lincoln University of Missouri was established in 1866, as Lincoln Institute, by the 62nd and 65th United States Colored Infantry, to provide education to African Americans through the combining of academics and labor. The institution adopted its current name in 1921, when it was officially designated a university by the state of Missouri.
The university currently has an enrollment of more than 3000 students, and offers a wide variety of academic programs and degrees, in numrous fields of study, being ranked 9th for most international students among master's level universities in the Midwest, 5th for campus ethnic diversity, and 3rd for economic diversity.
Lincoln's athletic teams are known as the Missouri Blue Tigers, who compete in at the NCAA Division II level in Mid-America Intercollegiate Athletic Association (MIAA), in various sports, for both men and women, including in baseball, basketball, golf, softball, tennis and track and field. The Blue Tiger are, perhaps, best known for their women's track team, which has made NCAA Division II history by winning the Outdoor Track and Field Championships five consecutive times.
The distinctive colors of the Blue Tigers are navy blue and white.
Among the notable alumni from Lincoln University of Missouri, there are: Mervyn M. Dymally - California politician, George Howard, Jr. - first African-American federal judge in Arkansas, Leo Lewis - member of the Canadian Football Hall of Fame, Carey Means - voice of Frylock on Aqua Teen Hunger Force, Oliver Lake - Jazz musician, and Joe Torry - actor and comedian.
